Inspired by the rich music scene in Leeds Planas (aka Toby Davies)
began producing in 2006. Releasing primarily on his label, Ranking
Records, and often collaborating with fellow Ranking producers
Ruckspin, Quark and Quantum Soul, his first few outings immediately
garnered attention from the likes of Ramadanman, Rob Booth and Mary
Anne Hobbs, who commented on the stunning use of live instruments over
samples in tracks such as Miserere (RAN001) and Heart Murmer (RAN009).

Since then Planas has gathered support from DJ’s and Journalists from
around the world for his unique sound which draws mainly on Dubstep,
Dub, Hip Hop, and an extensive background in live performance, meaning
a direct connection with music fans who are hungry for heavy, hard-
grooving and soulful music.

Planas has taken his studio productions into the live setting with his
new 4 piece “Planas Live” project. Already booked to support Submotion
Orchestra on their March UK tour, Planas Live comprises Niall Lavelle
(Drums, Samples & Percussion), Ed Thomas (Keys, Samples & Vocals),
Claudia Georgette (Vocals, Percussion, Keys) and Toby Davies (Bass,
Keys, Trumpet, Samples & Vocals). The set is based around Planas’s
debut album, The Long Game, which is due to be released on Exceptional

To date, Planas tracks have earned the support of Dj’s such as
Maryanne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1, XFM), Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1),
Brookes Brothers (Breakbeat Kaos), Ronnie Herel (BBC 1 Xtra), Mr
Scruff (Solid Steel), Ramadanman/Pearson Sound (Hessle Audio) and DJ
Nonames (Foreign Beggars). His Finest Hour remix is at 150,000 youtube
views and counting.

He has released tracks on labels such as Ranking Records, Exceptional
Records, Brownswood Bubblers, Getdarker, Immerse records and Four
Twenty Recordings.

Planas has DJ’d at events such as Sub Dub (London), Subline (Russia),
True Badness (Bulgaria) and is a resident at Outlook Festival
(Croatia) and Vagabondz (UK).

Toby is also available as a freelance producer/songwriter, and has
worked with artists such as Dionne Bromfield (Lioness), Tim Hutton
(The Prodigy, Groove Armada), L-vis 1990 (PMR, Night Slugs), Alex
Clare (Island) and Sherry Davis (Universal US). He also co-produced
Gentleman’s Dub Club’s “Open Your Eyes” E.P.
